Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach

Port Waikato

Sunset Beach of Port Waikato lies on the river mouth of the mighty Waikato River, North Island's largest river. Sharks are known to give birth a little up the river, but am sure they got better things to do than harming surfer. The drive from Auckland is about an hour and a half, going south. A channel on the southern end brings you out to the line up. Be careful not to surf the southern end waves too long as they usually end up in the rocks. Like all west coast beaches, often big and powerfull with strong rips. Sometimes getting behind the break is a already a mission. But still good bars that produce quality lefts and rights if conditions are good.
