What you can expect:
2 hr sessions are broken down as follows:
- Stretching exercises.
- Basic surf theory (including safety instruction).
- Entering and exiting the water.
- Judging waves and catching waves lying down on board.
- Learning how to stand on a surfboard.
After putting on your wetsuit and rash vest (for easy identification), your surf coach will take you through some basic surf theory.
You will learn about your surfboard, a leash, fins and top and bottom decks.
Then your surf instructor will work out which foot will be your front foot before you go into the ocean.
At this stage you will go no further than waist deep water - this is important for safety reasons and to insure you are close to your coach for feedback on your progress.
At first you will be catching white water (or broken waves, also known as foamies).
Your surf instructor will pull you into your first couple of waves until you are able to paddle your surfboard into waves yourself.
Once you are comfortable with surfing in on your stomach and catching waves its back to the beach.
This is now where the fun starts! Your surf coach will now take you back onto the beach to run through some techniques to standing up on your surfboard. Various techniques will be demonstrated and discussed, finding the one that works best for you.
After a few minutes of practice it's back onto the water, with the remainder of the lesson consisting of you practising getting to your feet and learning how to keep your balance.
By the end of your first lesson you should be able to get to your feet and ride (even if it is only for a few seconds).
We also offer advanced lessons were you will learn how to execute turns and move onto catching open faces (unbroken waves/green waves).
Students must be able to swim 50m in open water!
Please bring to the attention of your instructor any medical condition that may affect your safety, (or the safety of others), such as heart problems, epilepsy, allergies, any medication being taken and any condition likely to be made worse by participation in a surfing course.
