everything depends on the teacher.
Fr, 01/28/2011 - 12:18 – sid001Been there in late autumn and enjoyed the island very much.
Accomodation in the surf house is fairly okay. if you get the right room, you can enjoy a small roof terrace (okay, if you aren't blown away by the strong winds).
The village Famara is... just boring. You have the choice between some low to mid class restaurants and about two bars. At the surfer bar there you get free wifi access, but mostly no power socket. So bring a notebook with a fully charged battery! ;-)
There's also one small (yes, very small) supermarket, and some surf shops, of course. - By the way: If you're planning to stay longer, without a surf course, take a rental board at one of the shops! They're much cheaper than at the surf school, you can change them whenever you like, they give you wax and - if you're lucky - spot recommendations.
Food: The lunch package you get ("lunch at the beach") is not made with much love, and we didn't really like it. If you are a bit into cooking, you'll find everything to prepare GREAT sandwiches on that island, and we strongly recommend you prepare some by yourself.
Unfortunately the surf school doesn't have the license (or insurance, or whatever) to go to another beach than to Famara beach, which is really bad, when Famara is completely blown-out one whole week long. There are so many other nice spots to discover, but you have to go through the sandstorms to the mushy waters to fight the foam... :-(
Material: They have got the standard equipment: NSP & Southpoint (also BIC? Don't remember...), but the condition was okay. They also have plenty of lengths and shapes.
I wouldn't go to Famara again just for surfing, next time we'll choose north of Fuerteventura again, if it's gonna be Canary Islands. But Gran Canaria sure is the better place for non-surfer travel mates: There are plenty of interesting places to discover (volcanos, especially Timanfaya, Cameos del agua, the coves in the south...).
